Gap-filling Translation

Set 11

1) The car needs (service).

Click here to show/hide the explanation

EN: need + V-ing (BrE) ≈ “need to be V-ed”.
needs servicing → just describes a state/condition (“The car is in need of attention”). It’s neutral, almost impersonal, and doesn’t carry the sense of your burden. It works if you’re commenting on the car’s condition right now, but not if you’re lamenting your routine.
needs to be serviced → highlights necessity/requirement/regular obligation. You can use it in a complaint, but it still sounds a bit formal/neutral: “This car needs to be serviced every 6 months.”
I have to have it serviced → this is the idiomatic, natural way to complain about your obligation. It clearly centers on your routine burden: “I’m sick of this car — I have to have it serviced every couple of months!”

Показать объяснение на русском

RU: need + герундий = “нужно, чтобы это сделали”; равно to be serviced. Разг. вариант to get serviced.
Но если мы хотим констатировать факт, что нам действительно приходится регулярно обслуживать машину, то надо использовать 'has to be serivced / have to have the car V3'
