📝 Role-Play Exercise: Should We Expand the Franchise?
Task: Work in pairs. One partner argues we should expand nationwide; the other argues we shouldn’t expand yet. Use the active vocabulary and grammar patterns below.
Instructions
- Make a dialogue of 6–10 lines (3–5 turns per speaker).
- Use at least 3–4 grammar patterns from the list.
- Use several words from the active vocabulary (open the spol blocks).

Grammar Patterns to Use
- Present Perfect Continuous — We have been doing quite well recently; standards have been slipping.
- Negative PPC — The director hasn’t been keeping a tighter leash on payroll.
- It’s time + Past Simple — It’s time we set up shop in new towns.
- Should (advice / expectation) — We should discard trash more often; the truck should arrive at noon.
- I’d rather + V1 — I’d rather expand cautiously than risk a disaster.
- It is better + smb + Present Simple — It is better the manager issues funds only after an appraisal.
- Ought to — We ought to keep the brand spotless.
- Must (strong necessity) — All branches must maintain hygiene, or we are done for.
Example Starter
Partner A (for expansion): “It’s time we set up shop in the suburbs. Even if loan interest is high, our spot-on system will justify the risks.”
Partner B (against expansion): “Nah, I don’t think we should. Our dwindling savings have been decreasing, the franchise fee is huge, and cash-flow problems are clear as day. If branches are 60 days past due, we’re done for.”
