Student Response: Honestly, I was really surprised—and disappointed—by this announcement. I was planning to enroll in the astronomy course next semester because I recently found a job posting that perfectly matches my interests. It involves data analysis for space research, combining astronomy, math, physics, and some IT skills. I thought taking astronomy for credit would help me build a more relevant academic background. Now, I’m worried that without it on my transcript, the employer might not take my application seriously. Sure, I can take the course as a non-credit seminar, but that probably won’t carry the same weight. It just feels like the university is removing something valuable for students who actually do want to pursue careers in this area—even if they’re not the majority. I wish they had considered that some of us do find astronomy professionally meaningful.
